Frequently asked questions

Do you have any queries regarding our affordable homes to rent? We’ve put together a list of useful FAQs to address any uncertainties you may have.

What is social housing?

Social housing exists to provide affordable homes to those who need it most. We are a social housing landlord, which means our rented homes are generally more cost-effective than if you were to privately rent. Beyond Housing can also offer a longer, more secure tenancy to give you additional peace of mind. We have an extensive portfolio of over 15,000 affordable homes to accommodate members of the community that require comfortable, rented housing.

What are the benefits of affordable homes to rent with Beyond Housing?
  • Over 15,000 properties
  • Independent and supported living service
  • A repairs and maintenance service on hand when you need it most
  • Out of hours emergency repair
  • A dedicated housing officer
  • A free annual gas and safety check
  • No administration fees
  • Easy, flexible ways to pay your rent.
Am I eligible to apply for social housing?

When you apply for social housing with us, we will have to complete all necessary security and eligibility checks. To qualify for our affordable homes, you must:

  • Be aged 16 or over (if you are 16 and 17 years old, you’ll need a guarantor)
  • Have been assessed as being in housing need.

We’ll take the size of your household into account when allocating a home and we’ll ask you to complete an affordability assessment to make sure that social housing is right for you.

How do I bid?

Depending on your location, you’ll need to bid for one of our rented homes using one of the choice-based lettings schemes. These schemes let you choose which home you’d like to be considered for by placing a bid. You’ll need to be registered with either Tees Valley Homefinder, North Yorkshire Home Choice or Yorkshire Council to place a bid with our social housing scheme. We may also take referrals for housing, for example, if you are homeless.

Do I need to provide a reference?

References are important as they allow us to check you have a good track record of paying your rent on time, keeping your home tidy and acting respectfully towards your neighbours and community.

We’ll always ask for your permission first, but we’ll need to contact your current or previous landlord before we can offer you a tenancy with us.

How do I pay for my rented housing?

We offer simple payment plans that work around you. Direct debit is the most seamless and efficient way to pay your rent, however, we offer a range of payment options to find the most convenient approach. If you’d like to set up a direct debit, contact a member of the team on our live chat or you can email us at rent.income@beyondhousing.co.uk and we will help get you set up. We are also trialling a text and email reminder service to send a reminder three days before your rent is due, to help you stay on track of your direct debits.

What if I don’t keep up with my rent payments?

It is important to contact us as soon as possible if you’re concerned about making your rent payments – we’re here to offer support. You may fall into rent arrears and run the risk of losing your home if your payments are late so be sure to set up an affordable arrangement with us in the initial stages and reach out to us if you’re worried about missing payments.
