Plans for the future of Marske Square
Beyond Housing is partnering with Groundwork North East & Cumbria to improve Marske square and make it a more enjoyable space for everyone in the community.
The plans include changes to the layout to make the space more accessible and easier to use for community events. There will be new seating areas, improved walkways with different coloured paving, and more trees and shrubs planted to make the area greener. Existing sandstone blocks will be reused to build new walls with wooden seats on top, combining modern use with traditional materials.
Project proposals subject to funding
- Open up the square, creating a large central multi-functional space by removing the section of existing raised grass area
- Re-use walling sandstone to create a new raised grass area in unutilised north west corner
- New paving, level to tarmac to refresh the look of the square and provide a new suitable surface for temporary events
- Introduce new wall-top oak timber seating on the newly constructed curved walls to provide more seating
- Refurbish and re-use existing street furniture, including benches, planters, and litter bins
- Add trees to the edge of the newly paved area to add greenery and soften the hard landscape, whilst keeping usable space.
