How to take a meter reading on a smart meter

Smart meters will automatically take your meter readings. If you want them for your own peace of mind, you can still get them.

Find out your gas reading

  1. The screen will probably be off. Press the red button to wake it up
  2. Once it says Credit On, you can press the red button again
  3. The screen will say Meter Index. That’s your meter reading.

Find out your electricity reading

Does your meter have two barcodes on it, like this?

If so, here’s how to take a meter reading:

Tap the green A button three or four times to go through the options.

Keep scrolling through options until the meter reading display screen shows “Rate 01 Act Imp”. This shows your meter reading. If you have a time of use/two rate tariff, press the button again for “Rate 02 Act Imp” for the second-rate reading.

If you go too far, keep pressing the button. It’ll loop back around.

If your meter has three barcodes on it, here’s how to take a meter reading:

Press the green A button twice and then hold down to get to menus.

Keep scrolling through options until the meter reading display screen shows “Total Act Import”. This shows your meter reading. If you have a time of use/two rate tariff, press the button again for “Total Act Import 2” for the second-rate reading.

If you go too far, keep pressing the button. It’ll loop back around.

How do I get my gas reading?

Some gas meters have two display windows, so check both for a row of numbers – that’s your meter reading.

Getting a reading on a digital meter:

  1. Press the red button ‘A’ to turn the screen on
  2. Once the screen’s loaded, press the red button ‘A’ twice
  3. You should see a screen that says ‘Meter Index’ – this is your meter reading.

How do I get my electricity reading?

You may need to go through multiple screens on your meter. Each screen has a letter at the left of your display.

Finding the right screen:

  1. Press the blue button on your meter to get the screen information up
  2. Press the blue button again to go from screen to screen
  3. If you have a single rate meter for electricity, your reading is on screen H
  4. If you pay different rates for your electricity depending on the time of day, your readings are on screens H and J.
