High rise homes

If there is a fire or smoke inside your flat and your escape route is clear:

  • Get everyone out, close the front door and evacuate the building by the nearest available exit
  • Use the stairs, not the lift and press a fire alarm call point
  • Dial 999, give the address of the building including the number of your flat and the floor on which it is located.

If there is a fire or smoke inside your flat but your escape route is NOT clear:

  • Go to a room as far from the fire or smoke as possible and close the door
  • Dial 999, give the address of the building including the number of your flat and the floor on which it is located
  • State there is a fire/smoke in your flat and you are not able to evacuate. Use towels or bedding at the bottom of the door to block the smoke.

If there is a fire in another part of the building but not inside your flat:

  • You are usually safer staying in your flat unless heat or smoke begins to affect you or directed by the fire brigade to evacuate
  • If you feel as though you are in danger then evacuate the building
  • Dial 999, give the address of the building including the number of your flat and the floor on which it is located
  • If you are in the communal area, evacuate the building and call 999.
