🌱 What does ‘net zero’ mean?

Net zero means any emissions would be balanced by schemes to offset an equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere, such as planting trees or using technology like carbon capture and storage.

🌱 Background

We know that the UK Government has committed to reaching net zero carbon (NZC) emissions by 2050. Homes can be big emitters of carbon, so to meet this target on how housing associations heat both new and existing homes must change.

This presents a huge challenge for the social housing sector. Building zero carbon new homes is the ‘easy’ part. Far more challenging is the upgrade of existing homes – this is why working with the residents who already live in these homes will provide a great starting point for making those changes.
