We’re committed to sustainability and achieving the government’s 2050 net-zero goal.

Through our strategic asset management plan, Beyond Housing has committed to reduce the carbon impact of our business operations by at least 20% by 2025.

We have developed a ‘zero-carbon ready’ roadmap for our existing homes, which sets out our path to net-zero through energy efficiency work and rolling out low-carbon heating and renewable technology.

We will improve the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) ratings of all our homes to at least an EPC ‘C’ by 2030; in line with the government’s target. Currently, 85% of our properties meet EPC ‘C’ or above.

To reduce the risks of fuel poverty, reduce customer energy bills and reduce our carbon emissions, we have committed to significant investment programmes and accessing government funding streams such as the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF), to install energy efficiency measures such as wall and roof insulation, heating controls, and solar PV.

This work will help us prepare for the rollout of low-carbon heating from 2035, such as air source heat pumps.

We also submit an annual Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) report as a requirement of our sustainable bond; with a commitment to adopt the sustainable reporting standard for social housing.

Sustainability for new build/development

To support the government’s aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, 50% of new build homes from 2023/2024 will be carbon-neutral. The balance of new build homes from 2023/2024 will be EPC A and all new homes will be ‘off gas’ by 2025, in line with the future homes standard.

What we’ve done so far

We’re excited to be embarking on a new project to provide a more sustainable heating network for Regent House in Darlington.

This project marks a significant milestone in our commitment to providing comfortable and energy-efficient housing solutions for our residents.

We are delighted to be part of a consortium led by the North East and Yorkshire Net Zero Hub that has successfully attracted funding from the Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund Wave 2.1 to deliver a £80 million retrofit project across the North East and Yorkshire.

We have kickstarted the year by successfully installing our first heat pump.

With more than 15,000 houses across the North East, we are hoping that the installation will prompt a rise in the uptake of heat pumps and other renewable forms of energy in other households.

A number of our customers will soon benefit from improved energy efficiency, following the award of a grant from the Government’s Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund (SHDF).

A total of 60 homes will have energy-saving external wall insulation fitted, ensuring they will be suitable for the installation of clean heating systems in the future.

Useful information

Tackling climate change and reducing global warming is crucial for us all which is why sustainability, energy efficiency and becoming net zero are key priorities for Beyond Housing.
