Introduction
Beyond Housing customer, Lisa, initially contacted the Employment Support and Training team (EST) in February 2023. She wanted support with a career change and her goal was to work for the NHS.
Background
Lisa had been self-employed as a hairdresser for many years, but due to a shoulder injury, she had to stop and consider a career change. Lisa was disappointed but determined to use this as an opportunity to retrain to work in care or for the NHS. As a naturally caring person, Lisa knew this industry would be a good fit, and she already had a lot of transferable skills.
Story
Throughout Lisa’s appointments, we identified several courses for her to complete to facilitate her entry into the care sector. Lisa undertook multiple jobs to maintain her income while she retrained and achieved her Health and Social Care Level 1 and First Aid in the Community qualifications. Though she was happily completing these while working, she realised working in care wasn’t her dream job, and she knew a change was necessary.
Lisa reconnected with our service in July 2024, where we updated her CV and reviewed the progress she had made since our initial meeting. Her advisor informed her about the NHS Prospects course, which was precisely what she had been seeking, but knew she needed to improve her Maths and English Functional Skills first.
Lisa enrolled to work towards these qualifications with a local training provider, and when the NHS Prospects course became open for applications, we assisted her with the application form and interview. After applying in October, Lisa secured a place on the January 2025 course, allowing her to focus on her Maths and English in the meantime.
Outcomes
Lisa has recently started the 12-week NHS Prospects course. She hoped to work in the Podiatry team, but since it wasn’t an option on her application, she was uncertain about her chances. However, upon starting the course, Lisa was offered a placement in the Podiatry team, and she is absolutely thrilled! She shared that she wouldn’t have reached this milestone without the dedicated support of her advisor. Lisa genuinely appreciates the guidance she received throughout the NHS Prospects enrolment process and is grateful for all the help we provided along the way.
