Project: Volunteering

Will began volunteering at Westfield Farm’s reception in 2026, his duties included welcoming visitors, signing people in and recording relevant information. At first Will was very shy and lacking in confidence and he also struggled to travel independently.

Whilst volunteering, Will developed his computer skills and improved his customer service abilities. He also worked with other volunteers and our team, and this environment increased his confidence. Initially, Will was directly supported by our team when it came to travelling. They would meet him before entering the Westfield Farm building and would also guide him to the correct bus stop at the end of his session. This intensive support was successful and it empowered Will to face his travel barriers with more independence as time went on. Overcoming some of his personal challenges, such as travelling independently, has given Will a big boost in confidence which is helping to increase his aspirations of gaining work.

Will now attends interviews completely on his own, he travels on the bus by himself. He also volunteers confidently and is showing strong motivation towards gaining paid employment with his newly developed skillset.

Will said: “During my time volunteering on reception at Westfield Farm, I have developed computer skills, increased my confidence and worked on customer relations.

The staff and other volunteers are easy to get along with, and the relaxed and friendly environment promotes community, productivity, skill building, purpose, friendships and preparation for the workplace.”
