How to tell Universal Credit about your rent changing in April 2026

If you claim Universal Credit you will be sent a ‘Confirm your housing costs’ to-do in April 2026.

You must complete this to-do to report your annual rent changes.

If your housing costs are paid by Universal Credit:

  • Keep your rent increase letter somewhere safe – you will need it on or soon after Monday 6 April 2026
  • Wait until you are sent a to-do in April called ‘Confirm your housing costs’
  • Use the information in the letter to complete the to-do before the due date to avoid problems with your payments.

Please do not contact Universal Credit to report these changes before they have happened. You can only report the change after the date the rent has actually increased which is on or after 6th April 2026.
