CCTV and Smart Doorbell Cameras

Installing surveillance equipment like CCTV or a smart doorbell with a camera can be a great way to improve the security of your home.

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) have published guidance on home CCTV systems.

If you already have surveillance equipment or are planning to install it, here are some key points for you:

  • People in your local area may have concerns about a camera or might be unhappy about being recorded. Be considerate when choosing your equipment and setting it up
  • Ideally, your equipment should only capture images within the boundary of your property. If your door faces a communal area, you should only capture images of the area outside your door. If that’s not possible, the rules change. What are the rules?
  • Audio recording is considered highly intrusive and is unlikely to be justifiable in most circumstances. You should consider this when choosing your equipment and choosing your default settings
  • Your equipment should be correctly maintained to ensure it continues to respect the rights of people in your local area
  • If your surveillance equipment has a negative impact on people in your local area, you may be in breach of your tenancy agreement, and Beyond Housing will take appropriate action.

If you are concerned or unhappy about surveillance equipment in your local area, the guidance on home CCTV systems also offers a range of guidance and support for you.
