Kyle’s apprenticeship and beyond
Apprenticeship experience
Where it all started
I was working in the kitchen industry, dealing with unsociable hours, and struggling to maintain a positive work-life balance. After completing university, I decided to explore the apprenticeship route.
Getting a foot in the door
A family member who works for Beyond Housing told me about upcoming apprenticeships, and encouraged me to apply. I initially had a phone interview and was then invited to attend the apprenticeship recruitment day.
The apprenticeship
Starting my apprenticeship was daunting, especially with the thought of returning to a classroom where most apprentices would be much younger than me. However, I appreciated getting paid while learning on the job and I always had a great support bubble thanks to my mentor, trade colleagues and events, such as apprentice brunches and my one-to-ones.
While completing my apprenticeship, I had numerous opportunities to learn other trades while working across various areas of the company. From voids to repairs to boiler installs, I got the chance to try my hand at many things.
Opportunity knocks
After completing my apprenticeship, I successfully attained a full-time position as a gas engineer. Now, I spend most days problem solving and continuously improving my skill set, with my mentor still close by for support.
Recommendation
I highly recommend applying for an apprenticeship, regardless of age or work background. I was nearly 26 with zero experience in the industry when I started and since completing my apprenticeship, I’ve secured a career for life!
