Natasha’s apprenticeship journey
Natasha Bluck – Joinery
Where it all started
At the age of 26, I considered changing my career. Growing up, I never thought becoming a tradesperson was a possible career path for me. Having already attended university, the idea of beginning an apprenticeship seemed impossible to me as I was older. In the end, I volunteered on several construction sites over a six-month period while applying for apprenticeships, which helped me be confident that my decision to change careers was the right one.
Getting a foot in the door
The application process included a telephone interview, followed by an all-day event where I spoke to current tradespeople and potential future mentors. After an English and Mathematics test, we were required to create a metal keyring according to instructions. Our final interview took place at the end of the day. I was thrilled to receive the news that my application had been successful, and I was eager to begin my apprenticeship in joinery.
The apprenticeship
In September 2019, I became an Apprentice Joiner. I then went on to complete a Level 2 Site Joinery qualification in 2022 and my Advanced Joinery & Carpentry qualification in 2024. Throughout my apprenticeship, there were big challenges, such as COVID-19, which slowed down my progress. However, Beyond Housing has been outstanding in supporting me throughout the process, and I have been fortunate to work with excellent colleagues during my apprenticeship. My skills range from precision joinery to complex construction tasks, as well as picking up skills from other trades such as plastering, brickwork, and plumbing. Thanks to my variety of experiences during my apprenticeship, I have grown increasingly confident in my capabilities.
Opportunity knocks
Upon completing my apprenticeship, the company continued to employ me as a Career-Grade Joiner (Improver). I hope to further develop in this role and work towards becoming a multi-skilled joiner. In addition to this, I am now a mentor to other apprentices, as I have a lot of experience and knowledge since achieving my qualifications.
Recommendation
I will always cherish my apprenticeship opportunity and look forward to continuing my involvement with Beyond Housing for many years to come. The support and understanding I received as a neurodiverse individual has truly enabled me to thrive. My apprenticeship experience has supported me to better understand the value of various elements that contribute to the success of this organisation, and I would highly recommend a Beyond Housing apprenticeship to anyone who is thinking about it!
