Jordan’s apprenticeship and beyond
Where it all started
In 2019, I made a big career change, leaving retail behind to follow my passion for woodworking, by starting a joinery apprenticeship with Beyond Housing.
Getting a foot in the door
“Within weeks of starting my apprenticeship, I knew I made the right choice. The company supports people to grow and its values match mine.
The apprenticeship
Alongside developing my skills and passion for joinery, I had the chance to learn various other trades, boosting my confidence. I actively participated in discussions, working groups, and other opportunities that enriched my experience. Throughout my apprenticeship, I felt valued as a team member and had the privilege of working with some brilliant colleagues from whom I learned a great deal.
Opportunity knocks
After completing my level 2 joinery qualification, I immediately knew I wanted to pursue a level 3 qualification. I began applying for joinery positions within the company and successfully secured a full-time role as a joiner. Over time, I started seeking further development opportunities and grew very interested in advancing my career.
Beyond…
An opportunity came up so I applied for it and successfully secured a fix-term, secondment opportunity as a charge hand. The job is part of an exciting new pilot project based in Whitby, so I am taking on all sorts of different tasks and responsibilities, including; health and safety, checking completed work, organising resources, solving problems, and working closely with customers. There’s lots to learn and I am really enjoying the experience.
Recommendation
For anyone looking to advance after an apprenticeship, I’d say the key is to be ambitious, explore areas of the business that interest you, and take advantage of any available training and development opportunities that come your way!
