Demolition work begins on Ormesby flats
Friday 24 April 2026
Demolition work has now started at Spencerbeck House in Ormesby, with Beyond Housing appointing MGL Demolition to carry out the safe removal of the vacant high-rise block.
Works began on site on Monday 20 April 2026 and are expected to continue until Friday 8 January 2027.
Spencerbeck House, a ten-storey building originally constructed in 1972, has stood empty since September 2023. We have now moved into the next phase of the scheme, with MGL Demolition on site to manage the demolition programme on our behalf.
MGL Demolition is an experienced contractor with a strong track record in delivering complex projects safely and responsibly. At Spencerbeck House, the demolition will begin with site set-up, followed by the removal of internal fixtures and fittings to maximise recycling before demolition of the structure is completed.
Measures are also being put in place to reduce disruption for nearby residents. The building will be wrapped in protective sheeting during demolition and water cannons will be used to suppress dust as far as possible.
Beyond Housing Regeneration Manager Ben Briggs, said:
“The start of demolition at Spencerbeck House is an important milestone.
“This building has stood empty for some time and, while it has provided some recent community benefit through training exercises for emergency services, we are now pleased to be moving ahead with the demolition.
“MGL Demolition is a trusted and experienced contractor, and we are committed to ensuring these works are carried out safely, responsibly and with as little disruption to local people as possible. We will continue to keep residents informed throughout the demolition programme. Following demolition, we will be looking to repurpose the site for community use, a consultation will be held in the coming months so residents can have their say on the proposals”
Mark Davison, Head of MGL Demolition has said:
“We are pleased to be working with Beyond Housing on the demolition of Spencerbeck House and to begin this phase of the programme. As a vacant high-rise structure, this is a complex demolition that requires careful planning, strong safety controls and close coordination with all stakeholders.
“The works will be carried out in a phased and controlled manner, with a strong focus on safety, recycling and minimising disruption to local residents. We are committed to delivering the project safely and responsibly and will continue to work closely with Beyond Housing to keep residents informed as works progress.”
