Approval granted for redevelopment of Marske Square
Friday 21 February 2025
Plans to transform Marske Square have been unanimously approved by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Regulatory Committee. The project, led by Beyond Housing in partnership with Groundwork NE & Cumbria, will see a comprehensive redesign of the square, creating an improved environment for residents, visitors, and businesses.
The scheme will introduce a reconfigured layout that increases the usability of the space, making it more accessible and adaptable for community events. The redesign incorporates new seating areas, resurfaced pedestrian walkways featuring a mix of light and dark-toned paving, and additional tree and shrub planting to enhance the green character of the area. Existing sandstone walling blocks will be reclaimed and repurposed to construct new walls topped with timber seating, blending modern functionality with traditional materials.
A key aspect of the redevelopment is the introduction of new street furniture, including removable cast iron bollards in keeping with the surrounding area, rain gardens edged with locally sourced stone, and the creation of a raised grass area. These elements will improve the aesthetic quality of the space and contribute to sustainable urban drainage and biodiversity enhancements. The plans also include upgraded drainage systems, ensuring that water management is effectively integrated into the design.
Marske Square has long served as an important public space, hosting market stalls and fairground rides during public holidays such as the annual Christmas parade. The improvements will ensure that it continues to serve as a focal point for local events while also providing a more inviting space for daily use
Richard Cooper, Director of Asset & Sustainability at Beyond Housing, said: “We are delighted to receive planning consent from the Regulatory Committee for the redevelopment of Marske Square. This project will breathe new life into the space, creating an attractive and functional environment that enhances the community experience while respecting the character of the area.”
With planning consent secured, work is expected to commence in the coming months, with further updates to follow as the project progresses.
