Bringing communities together: Two new centres to support local groups

Tuesday 11 March 2025

We’re proud to be making a real difference by opening up two community centres to support local groups and bring people together.

Wykeham Court Community Centre in Skelton is now home to the Tees Community Hub, offering crucial support for those facing financial struggles, emotional distress, isolation, and more. With a charity shop, community café, food, period and clothing banks, and a variety of social & educational sessions, the hub is actively serving and uplifting the community.

CEO and Founder Tonia Nixon said: “TEES Charity has been working alongside Beyond Housing since 2020. This collaboration has supported over 60 individuals and families since then. We have worked together to make ‘a house a home’ for tenants and support them with everything from carpets, furniture, homeware, advice, food and energy vouchers, clothing, toiletries and cleaning packs, signposting and being an ear or voice when they feel alone.”

Birkdale Community Centre in Eston has also made a comeback. After being a vital warm space before the pandemic, local voices called for its return and Beyond Housing listened. Now, Grangetown Generations, a local not-for-profit community organisation, is leading the way, creating a vibrant space for community-led events and activities.

Susan, a local resident said: “We love coming to Birkdale, it’s all friendly, and when you think about people that are lonely it is somewhere to make friends, laugh and have food together. The staff are very lovely people and make us feel very welcomed, above and beyond.”
